Scrip- This is a year-long fundraiser.  It is a super easy way to raise funds for the PTA simply by buying gift cards through Scrip.

Carrie’s goal is to make a document with descriptions of events and estimated time commitments for those who may want to volunteer.

Question asked on Watch Dogs - this is a program that has the intent of getting more male role models in the building (but anyone can volunteer). The volunteers spend the day (or half day if they cannot volunteer all day) in the school working as a volunteer. This program will probably kick off yet this month or early October.

Question was asked on Room Parents - this is a parent who organizes class parties for a specific classroom. The room parent will plan games and create a sign-up genius to organize volunteers for food, etc. The question was asked if there is a tutorial on how to create a sign-up genius and in the past there has been a training for room parents with a demo. Carrie F. also mentioned a video tutorial could be created as well.

Principal’s Report - Principal John Cain:

September 27 will be a Curriculum Night - Parent University. This is where parents will bring their kids and the parents get to be a student. Mr. Cain suggested making it a PTA event with Food Trucks and activities for the kids outside. There will also be an open gym with the bounce  house in the gym, plus other staff members holding a few games. The feedback was positive for  having food trucks there, with them being open beforehand (starting at 5:00). Carrie F. will send Mr. Cain list of food truck contacts.

Mr. Cain brought up that there is a need to purchase stop signs for safety patrol. The group agreed that the PTA can support this purchase.

The Homecoming parade is this Thursday (September 9 at 6:00 PM) and the 5th graders are invited to participate in the parade. The High School is also sending cheerleaders and football players to Grant Wood to welcome students in the morning on Thursday and Friday of this week.

Mr. Cain discussed the Beyond the Bell program, which is sponsored by an outside foundation to offer support to eligible kids after school Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. There is a monthly zoom meeting with the committee that needs a parent volunteer to attend. A volunteer was received in this meeting.

Mr. Cain encouraged participation and volunteers for PTA in order to provide students with an even more enriched experience. In addition to the events there is also the fundraising aspect. Past fundraisers have helped to purchase picnic tables and create the outdoor learning space. Future possibilities are purchasing boulders for the outdoor learning space and also planting trees on the hillside by the playground.

Mr. Cain shared the Conditions for Learning survey data. This is an optional survey given to students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades and includes topics such as relationships and safety. Grant Wood saw significant increases in scores and there are also some areas for improvement. As a result of past scores Grant Wood has implemented PATHs, which is a social emotional curriculum.

Mr. Cain challenged everyone to bring a friend (or more) to the next PTA meeting and emphasized that without volunteers and event chairs, we can't put on the great events for our children.

Meeting was adjourned.

Next Meeting: Tuesday, October 5th
